Why your child to slams the door when they’re mad

1 - They are expressing anger inappropriately.

Slamming the door is gratifying! It feels good to hear the output of your energy.

Maybe they are just angry/upset and don’t “mean” to.

When you are super charged up (escalated), You don’t realize how your actions are affecting others

Either way it’s inappropriate to slam doors and we need to shape it

2- They are looking for attention.

Yes! Sounds cRaZy that your child might want to get under your skin, have some kind of reaction, or get your attention in any way

So your yelling..... It aint working!

Its actually gonna make them keep slamming the door....

Cuz negative attention is still attention

If we give it minimal attention they will be less likely to continue to do it as well.

Why do kids talk back to their parents?

Can I ask you a honest question?

Are you confused on how to react when your kiddo back talks?

(or if they are just plain defiant...)

If so, there’s 2 main reasons that happens to most parents.

The first is that there is no real structure.

I’ve worked with many parents, and at the beggining they realize they aren’t aware of how to respond in these situations. Most importantly, they don’t know where to start.

There’s a mindset and strategy to creating that structure, and once you understand how to do it properly there’s no going back.

The second is that the parents are not aware of the functions of behavior.

Because of they don’t know how to categorize the behavior, it is difficult to appropriate shape the behavior.

Parents react in one way, and it’s actually REINFORCING the behavior, MAKING IT MORE LIKELY TO HAPPEN.

But I’ve found that with the right basic knowledge and know how, it becomes a lot easier to extinguish (take away) the Maladaptive behaviors like talking back.

If you learn these skills to get your kiddo from a 3/10 to a 6/10 or from a 6/10 to a 9/10..

Then you have the ability to change your entire family life.

4 ways to build your self-esteem:

1. Pointing out strengths. 💪

What are they good at? Give them
verbal praise and point it out!

Verbal praise expedites the process. It helps the child start to focus on the positive or look
for the positive more often.

It also helps build relationship between you and your child. This is going to increase their confidence, self worth and self esteem.

2. Set realistic goals. 🙌

When your child achieves their goals, it will help them feel good about themself and their abilities.

It is important to set goals that are achievable, otherwise it may have the adverse effect.

I also like to do short term qoals first to get a couple of really easy quick wins!!🏆

3. Go have some fun! 🤗

Doing more things that make the child feel good will boost their self-esteem over time.

This could include spending time with loved ones, doing activities they enjoy, etc. 🥰

This would also be a good way to temporarily get
their mind off of what has been bringing them down.

4. Reframe their negative thoughts. 🖼

Start by challenging their negative thoughts.

When they have negative thoughts about themself, challenge them. Ask them if they are really true and if there is another way to look at the situation. 🙃

Help them flip their negative thoughts to be more positive

Building self-esteem takes time and effort, but it is worth it.🙌

⭐️When your child has high self-esteem, they will feel better about themself and their abilities.

⭐️They will also be more likely to achieve their goals and live a fulfilling life.

A suggestion is a choice…

…that means it’s optional😲

So what ends up happening is that you give the child a suggestion, thinking they’ll be smart enough to make the right choice. 😂

…and sometimes they don’t🤗

Or

You give the child the choice to something that isn’t optional…

But what happens then? 🧐

The choice you just gave the kiddo is taken away. Boom 💥 Just like that!

Now what’s that teaching the kiddo:
-their voice doesn’t matter
-they’re always wrong
-they’re not x enough

4 of the Most Common Mistakes Parents Make When Building A Relationship with Their Kiddo

When I’m trying to have fun and build my relationship with my wife, if I insist we play chess, what will happen???  At best, I’m looking at a game that is played half heartedly, we are both bored and it’s just a waste of time. 🫣

Instead, I should offer something I know she likes to do, too.   This way we are both having fun!!🥳

3. Making the activity way too long  A three hour commitment is a COMMITMENT🥱

Even one hour— it can be LOOOONNNNNGG😫

Let’s start off with a smaller goal.   I’ve had people start as low as 5 minutes. 🙃  4. Don’t stop trying  It’s not too late!!🥹  You can do this!!  **cue the Rocky Music** 😂  But seriously! At some point they will say yes, and then you can start building!!  ___________________________________
